Member of Technical Staff – Backend/AI

Our client, a venture-backed AI startup, is hiring a Member of Technical Staff – Backend & AI to join their team in New York. The successful candidate will develop secure, reliable backend systems and AI capabilities that help law enforcement and legal professionals search, interpret and act on complex evidence.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain secure, reliable backend services and distributed systems.

• Integrate and deploy large language models, vision-language models and other machine learning technologies into production.

• Develop RAG pipelines to process, retrieve and search unstructured evidence.

• Build tools for querying, modelling and reasoning across structured data.

• Create agentic workflows that reason, plan and act across multiple data sources.

• Assess emerging AI models, infrastructure and engineering methods to improve platform capabilities.

• Take ownership of technical projects from initial investigation through development, deployment and ongoing support.

• Resolve production issues and respond to urgent technical and operational requirements.

Skillset

• Strong backend development experience, including designing and building secure, resilient distributed systems.

• Proficiency in Python and the ability to work across different programming languages and infrastructure platforms.

• Hands-on experience deploying LLMs, VLMs or other machine learning models into production.

• Experience developing RAG pipelines or similar solutions for processing and retrieving unstructured data.

• Experience working with structured data, including query planning, semantic modelling or structured reasoning.

• A keen interest in agentic AI and emerging techniques for applying AI to real-world problems.

• Ability to own projects, make sound technical decisions and deliver in a fast-paced startup.

• Confidence navigating unclear requirements and solving unfamiliar technical problems.

• A practical, hands-on approach to troubleshooting and maintaining production systems.
